80s Sci-Fi UI (Concept)

The task was to create an 80s style Sci-Fi (or "Lo-Fi Sci-Fi") User Interface screen for a theroetical action RPG. This would take inspiration from movies such as Moon and the Alien series.

The screen in question is for a Mission Log, where the player can select a mission from the menu on the left, and then choose an additional option such as setting a waypoint.

The basic shapes and icons were created in Adobe Illustrator, finalized and arranged in Adobe Photoshop, animated in Adobe Flash, and finally given an 'RGB twitch' effect in Adobe After Effects.

You can download the Flash file HERE (requires Flash Player).

Icons Exploration

These icons were used in the left-hand panel, to signify which type of mission the player was accepting. As the project came together, many different icon designs were created.

To determine which icons were the most recognizable, various people were asked to identify the meaning of each icon without any context. As you can see, the Hacking icons had quite a few iterations, since it was probably the most difficult one to demonstrate visually. In the end, I settled on a padlock in a computer screen, after an almost perfect record of recognition.

The initial designs were very rounded, but then adjusted to be more angular in the final mockup, to better fit the concept.
